Calling all artists! The Art History Association and Lyceum are co-sponsoring an Art Exhibition titled "You the Artist!" the intent of which according to the mastermind behind the event, Kathryn Fedorko is to "Open up the creative minds in U of M Dearborn," as well as give value to things normally shunned by art exhibitions such as blueprints from engineering students, ethnic dress and pottery. "It's kind of limiting to think of art as merely photography or a painting," she said.

U of M Dearborn is a creative community and there are not a lot of opportunities to show that in our campus, we want people to realize that any creative process is an art," said Amanda Walter current president of AHA.

The inspiration for the exhibition came actually from Lyceum's own art exhibition Created Green held last semester. Through this exhibition Lyceum successfully converted recycled material and objects easily dismissed as trash into works of art. AHA, has a similar objective, but with a broader spectrum. AHA wants non-traditional art to be in the show with equal footing alongside traditionalist art styles such as paintings.

Although Lyceum's exhibition was a competition, generating 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners AHA is certain their exhibition would not be. "We didn't want it to be a competition because we wanted everybody to be completely free in displaying their work," said Fedorko.

Certificates however will be issued to all participants, an honor which the participants can mention in their resume. In addition, on February 3rd and 4th Kochoff C will exhibit all of the submitted art work for the pleasure of the Michigan public

The exhibition is open to all UMD students, faculty and staff with each individual allowed to submit two art pieces. Artists have complete creative freedom to indulge their imagination and hone their skills in any creative process from doodles to clay sculptures to knitted attire.

The only restriction being that creativity does not cross the border into an infringement of public-held beliefs of decency. Hence pornography and obscenity cannot be expressed through a visual medium.

The following information must be emailed to Kathryn at kfedorko@umd.umich.edu no later then January 31st in order for artists to be officially registered for the event. First and last name, if the artist is a student the student's major and academic classification (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) if the artist is a staff or faculty then their respective positions, the material used in creating the art piece, name of the artwork, the dimensions in inches and a digital photo.

The Art History Association is open to all students who love art regardless of their academic major and hosts various events such as trips to film theaters and art galleries. A trip to Chicago is also in the making. Prospective members should contact Amanda Walter via email, awalter2@gmail.com and express their intent to join.
