Tragedy took place on the Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) campus on Friday, April 10. HFCC student Asia McGowan, 20, was murdered by fellow student Anthony Powell, 28, who after killing McGowan killed himself.
In an effort to show support to the victims of the shooting, University of Michigan ÂÂÂ- Dearborn student Kristen McDonough created a banner for HFCC, which university students, faculty and staff signed.
"We've done similar things in the past when other campus shootings have occurred," said McDonough.
"I spoke to the UC Administration and the Student Activities Office about getting a banner made and displayed, and they were all for it. "
The banner was displayed outside of the bookstore Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week and it read, "UM-Dearborn supports our neighbors during this trying time." The banner also had the HFCC logo on it.
Signs were posted up throughout the campus for people to come and sign the banner as a way of sending out their thoughts and prayers to our neighbors. Wednesday after all the signatures had been collected the banner was delivered to the school.
"HFCC was very appreciative for the support," said McDonough.
"I also think that it says a lot about our campus that we can do something as simple as displaying a banner and even without people sitting there asking people to sign, it was completely filled with thoughtful messages."
HFCC has planned a memorial service for McGowan, which will take place this Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Courtyard on the HFCC main campus. For more information about the memorial service, visit hfcc.edu.
