Pirates took over Kochoff Hall during the Student Activity Board's annual Spring Blowout last Monday, April 13. Silver rings, black bandannas, eye patches and, of course, sailor hats were provided to go along with the pirate theme of the event. For the past nine years SAB has hosted this end of the year event, which allows students to partake in a day of fun before finals begin.

"Every year we have a different theme for Spring Blowout and this is an event we try to do to relieve students' stress and their pocketbooks," said SAB Chairman Richie Chambers.

Spring Blowout kicked off Student Activities Leading Student Appreciation (S.A.L.S.A.) Week, which is a variety of events that are sponsored by Student Government.

Wax hands remained one of the more popular activities with students, who stood in line for the chance to make their own art form hand impressions. There were also airbrush tattoos and caricaturist who were drawing self-portraits of people.

"The caricatures were really fun and I really enjoyed the wax hands as well," said senior Meosha Zachery.

Also, SAB presented "Make Your Own Video," which allowed students to dress up in silly costumes, and perform a popular song in front of a computerized background.

The musical sounds of David Campbell, who also performed at Winter Welcome in January, serenaded students during his performance on the UC stage while the festivities were going on in Kochoff Hall.

The activities lasted until 4 p.m., but students were still having fun even after the event came to an end. And thanks to SAB the fun lasted all night long with their game night at 7 p.m.

Overall, many students seemed to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of Spring Blowout.

"This year Spring Blowout was more convenient and organized. They allowed a longer time span for the students to enjoy the event," Zachery said.

However, UM-D sophomore James Andrews mentioned that the free food was the main reason why he attended the event.

"The food was great and it saved me from having to go out and buy something to eat," Andrews said.
