The University of Michigan-Dearborn hockey team held its annual end-of-year banquet on Sunday to celebrate a successful season, which featured marked improvements over last season's campaign.
The locker room is all cleaned up, sticks and pads hauled away, equipment packed, and the ice on the rink has been removed to make way for graduation and summer volleyball.
Still, there were achievements left to be honored, seniors left to be congratulated, and a season left to be acknowledged.
Festivities kicked off with a speech by former Athletic Director, and big donor, Dr. Peggy Foss. In the speech, she addressed the success of the recent season, and followed it up with inspirational comments on what the word "team" means.
From there, outgoing Hockey Booster Club President, Mr. Jerry Dawson, spoke of what it meant to him to see his son, captain Kahlin Dawson, play hockey at Dearborn for five years.
He said they've had such a fantastic support group from the Athletic Director, down to every last fan in the Wolf Pack, and every parent, player, coach, and media representative in between.
After Mr. Dawson left the stage, head coach Dave Debol stepped up to announce awards. First were the Academic All-Americans. To qualify, a player must be in his third season, and have a high grade point average.
Both forward Anthony Rini, and defenseman Bryan Czajka earned the distinction. Senior goaltender Stephen Yu is graduating with a 4.0 career GPA, but did not qualify for the award, as he has won it twice in his career.
Players scoring their first career college goals were given pucks, commemorating the moment. Those scoring first goals, this season, included James Telfer, Michael Macari, Brandon Contratto, Brandon VanOss, Andrew Rasky, Mark Bekkala, Mike Galvan, Brandon Wales, Justin Jeffe, and Kyle Papke. VanOss. Rasky and Galvan were second-year players this season, but are also defensemen, who traditionally score less often.
