There's a new scholarship on campus, The Student Legacy Scholarship. It is unique because it is organized by the student of the University of Michigan - Dearborn. Recipients would not be selected from faculty or administration, but from their own classmates.
Money for the award will be raised through organizations on campus. Their goal is $1,800 by May 1. According to Student Government Vice President, Jason David "We're definitely on the way."
The scholarship was initiated by Student Government, particularly Davis. "This is not a SG scholarship," said Davis. "Once things start rolling, SG will have one vote just like everyone else on the committee."
This scholarship will be "solely in the students' hands."
There will be a committee made up from one representative from every department such as athletics, cultural, greek, etc. The committee will then decided who receives the scholarship.
The purpose of the scholarship is to keep students leaders on campus, in the classroom, in their organization, or on the athletic fields. It's for any student facing financial hardships.
There are some requirements such as a minimum grade point average of 2.0, at least 12 credits completed, and be registered for six credit hours when money would be applied, but the main focus is campus involvement and the need for money.
Recently, Phi Mu held a fund-raiser at 360 Lounge in East Dearborn. The girls raised approximately $200. At 360 Lounge, UM-D students get 20 percent of their bill donated to the scholarship.
"Jason really needs recognition for this scholarship," said Lauren Pauzus, sophomore. "It's a huge display of his leadership," she said.
