When taking a look at the significance of Alcohol Awareness, it is quite clear that it isn't only alcohol that people need to be concerned about. These days, it is common to find date rape drugs, such as GHB, being integrated into the party scene.
GHB was once used as a chemical enhancement for body builders, but after serious side effects were found to be linked to the drug, it was quickly banned from the market and has since been deemed illegal.
However, that hasn't stopped people from making it at home with simple household products since simple step-by-step instructions can easily be found on the Internet.
With a nickname like liquid ecstasy, it is very easy to see how you or someone you know could come in contact with the drug. Think of a time when you have left a drink unattended or had someone you barely know get a beverage for you, or even a time when you filled your cup up straight from a punch bowl.
All these scenarios could be times when GHB could be slipped into your drink. Having not seen what went into your glass is a pretty clear sign to not drink from that glass. Usually your best bet is safety in numbers and that rule directly applies.
Watch out for you and your friends when out at night and if you can tell that a friend isn't acting like they do when they only drink alcohol, be aware of the steps you should take immediately to get help and prevent further harm.
Look for behavior such as, increased energy, happiness, talking or desire to socialize, especially if your friend doesn't normally act that way. Other signs of GHB poisoning could include: feeling overly affectionate and playful, enhanced libido, muscle relaxation, loss of coordination, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating or breathing, amnesia and even unconsciousness.
If you suspect that your friend has ingested GHB, first find a safe place away from the party to talk to your friend and make sure to keep them conscious. Then call 911 and get medical attention immediately.
Other signs include waking up the next morning from being out and having symptoms like your hangover is worse then it should be, or if you remember having a drink but cannot recall anything after that, or if your clothes aren't on properly. All of those are good indications to seek medical attention immediately.
All in all, the key to staying safe on Spring Break and at parties is to be smart; always go with a group of people that you trust.
