Last Saturday in Lansing, eight students from the University of Michigan-Dearborn were honored at Michigan Campus Compact's (MCC) 12th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards celebration.

Students Henda Al-Biatty, Amal Alsamawi, Cardi DeMonaco, Jr., Adam Harris, Amal Hassan, Zeshahn Humayun and Kristen Lewis were given with the Heart and Soul Award, and Nabila Ikram won the Commitment to Service Award for her work as president of the Student Environmental Association and the Focus the Nation event.

The Heart and Soul Award honors students who commit a significant amount of time, effort and energy to their communities through various service projects.

The Commitment to Service Award, which is given to only one student from each MCC campus each year, awards those students who "for either the breadth or depth" of his or her involvement in the community and through other service projects, and who has also demonstrated "meaningful reflection" upon the work that he or she has completed.

UM-D Student Activities Office Supervisor Randy Dillard nominated the students, who were among 160 other students to be honored at the event.

MCC is an organization that promotes the community service of students in communities throughout Michigan, and includes 41 colleges and universities across the state.

Several notable figures were in attendance at the ceremony, including Michigan Senator Glenn Anderson.

"Service is more than giving back to the community," said Al-Biatty. "It's about gaining a piece of yourself."

"I felt weird receiving an award since there are so many people on our campus who do [community service]," said Lewis on receiving her award.

"It's great to be rewarded for something you enjoy doing."
