Next Saturday, eight University of Michigan-Dearborn students will receive awards from the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) for their outstanding dedication to community service.
MCC is an alliance of university and college presidents across the state dedicated to developing civic responsibility as part of student life on their respective campuses. Every year since 1989, the MCC has recognized students from all over Michigan for their countless hours spent in the service of others.
The Commitment to Service Award is presented to one student from each member's campus acknowledging the breadth and depth of their service and ability for meaningful reflection.
"The award has given me the opportunity and honor to represent people who work hard to make a difference because, ultimately, most efforts and successes are the result of teamwork," said sophomore Nabila Ikram, a recipient of this year's award.
Seven other UM-D students will receive the Heart and Soul Award, recognizing their time, effort and personal commitment to service.
One of the recipients, Junior Kristen Lewis, participated in last year's Alternative Spring Break at Lake Charles, La.
"After volunteering there for a week, I came back and realized that volunteering is the one thing I feel most passionate about," said Lewis.
Sophomore Cardi DeMonaco, Jr., also receiving the Heart and Soul Award, first got involved in service with the Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp during high school and will complete a fourth year there this summer.
"Now, I continue to stay involved because I know how lucky I am to have it so well," said DeMonaco.
Senior Amal Hassan began volunteering through the UM-D Muslim Student Association and will also receive the Heart and Soul Award.
"This award is not for me, it is for everyone who inspired me to be the person I am today," said Hassan.
"It means that I gave my heart and soul to community service and I will do that for the rest of my life."
Henda Al-Biatty, Amal Alsamawi, Adam Harris, and Zeshahn Humayun will also receive the Heart and Soul Award.
The awards ceremony will be held on April 5 at 11 a.m. at the Holiday Inn-South in Lansing.
