Home of Reel Pride Michigan, the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak will host the week-long 2007 Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The theater in downtown Royal Oak, proud of the films' diversity as well as the artists whose work is displayed during the festival, plans to present a varied selection of LGBT flicks.

The film festival, spanning from Oct. 12 through 19, debuts with the Opening Night Gala. The Friday night premiere will present "Shelter," a film directed by Jonah Markowitz.

"Shelter" tells the story of a high school grad named Zach. Zach gives up his dream of attending Cal Arts to help his sister Jeannie raise her son. While stuck in San Pedro, California, Zach meets Shaun, a recently single screenwriter. The plot unfolds as Shaun and Zach begin spending time together.

After audiences attend the 8 p.m. showing of "Shelter," the Opening Night Gala provides a delicious dinner catered by Fandangles. Although the film festival's opening night will be quite an event, the rest of the week has much in store for film fans. Saturday Oct. 13 will consist of a jam-packed day of LGBT movies. Beginning with "Out Running," a political piece presented by Victory Fund and the Leadership Institute, the movie madness begins at 11 a.m. and will continue until midnight, concluding with "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

Reel Pride Michigan includes several other must-attend events. Sunday morning's Centerpiece Brunch allows audiences to eat breakfast and then enjoy a thought-provoking piece examining and interpreting the Bible's actual message to members of the LGBT community. "For the Bible Tells Me So" will show at 11:30 a.m., following the 10:30 a.m. brunch.

The Closing Night Extravaganza on Oct. 19 will showcase "Itty Bitty Titty Committee." Directed by Jamie Babbit, the film incorporates feminism, romance and comical relief. Focused around the life of a shy lesbian, Anna, "Itty Bitty Titty Committee" displays the revolutionary coming out of the timid young teen. The flick is followed by live music from Alex Winston. Reel Pride audiences can also attend the Closing Night After Party.

Although the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival features films that can be considered quite controversial, the event has received a great deal of support and sponsorship. Some of the festival's supporters include The Westin, Between the Lines, Whole Foods, the National Association of Social Workers and Paramount Bank.
