With a relatively young team nucleus, the key to next year's season for the University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball squad might be a contributor off the bench and a vocal leader to give the Wolves some edge.

They just may have found it with a four-girl freshman recruiting class set to add to the Wolves' already solid roster.

Four girls have signed letters of intent to join the Lady Wolves squad - Candice Cobb of Warren Mott, Katie Gulliver of Allen Park, Gina Marano of Edsel Ford and Katie Roberts of Trenton.

"I'm excited," said head coach Mary Pinkowski. "We have a core that believes in the philosophy and understands the system and now we have four girls coming in that will add to that nicely."

In Pinkowski's first year at the helm, UM-D finished with the most wins in school history, but lacked stamina down the stretch, losing six of their last seven games. The transition to a new coaching style and the absence of a true point guard were both contributing factors.

With the incoming freshman class, "they're all going to give something that will benefit our team," Pinkowski said. "Katie [Roberts] is a great floor leader and Gulliver is great in the post…Candice has great speed and Gina is scrappy and will get points off rebounds."

When asked if the frosh will sit to start the year and eventually earn playing time, Pinkowski said the best five will start and the best players will play. "It doesn't matter how old you are," she added.

But there is still a learning curve, especially when jumping from high school to college athletics.

"I'm looking forward to making an impact on the court as much as I can," said Gulliver, who averaged 10 points and eight boards per game her senior year for the Jaguars. She chose UM-D over other schools for its strong academic reputation. "I want to go into teaching and their program is great."

Roberts, considered by some to be the jewel of the class, averaged 15 points, almost five steals and over three assists per contest her senior year. She was named to the Detroit Free Press All-State sixth team.
