It was all about defense and teamwork for the University of Michigan-Dearborn lacrosse team as they defeated Adrian College, 7-1, in their home opener this past Sunday.
"Everyone did their job," defenseman Matt Laurinec said. "We weren't trying to do too much or take over the game as a group of individuals, but we played together and did things as a team."
The Wolves dominated the game despite a rough battle and tough competition. "Our win today was a credit to our team," senior Rabih Bazzi said. "Everyone played with class that befit our university and no one played down to the level of our competition."
Both the offense and defense worked together well on the field and all their efforts contributed to the victory.
The defense held Adrian at only one goal as the offense took it to the net and scored seven goals to finish out the game. "Our defensemen, Omar Takriti, Brian Kutnick, Matt Laurinec and Vincent Shaw played very well," Bazzi said.
On the offensive side, Junior Chris Cascadden scored a hat trick. Junior Brian Hanley had two goals, while Bazzi and sophomore Marcus Bokas each had one goal apiece.
The goalie, Junior Joel Rosen, also contributed to the win. Rosen made 12 saves and limited Adrian from tallying up the points. "Our goalie played a fantastic game and had many key saves," Bazzi said.
With the win, the Wolves are currently 2-1 after beating the University of North Dakota and losing to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in their season opener,
The team will go on to play their first conference games this Saturday against Grand Valley State University and Northern Michigan University.
"We need to keep working together and keep getting better so that we can get to the top of our division and then earn a playoff berth," Laurinec said.
As for the future of the team and the upcoming matches, the players are very optimistic in spite of the low numbers on the roster.
"Today's win was a solid statement to the rest of the league that we are indeed here to play and to make a run to the playoffs," Bazzi said. "In regards to upcoming games, our conditioning and consistent level of play will be a huge factor due to our low numbers."
"This upcoming weekend, we have two huge CCLA league games," Hanley added. "We are always looking for the athletes of UM-D to come out for the team, as our numbers are low and we are always recruiting."
