Look out Red Bull - there's a new seed being planted in the energy food industry.
The craze for energy drinks and foods is not going anywhere fast, despite the speedy aspirations of the pumped up products. Whether in pill, snack bar or drink form, energy-enhancers are found all over the food market. Now, energy drinks and beers have even been combined by companies like Budweiser to create alcoholic energy-boosting hybrid drinks.
However, for those who are sick of energy drinks filled with sugar and high in calories, Dakota Valley Products Inc., a food product manufacturer based in South Dakota, has a solution. Though they may not be as tasty or convenient as their liquid opponents, SumSeeds still have a kick to them.
These "supercharged" roasted sunflowers seeds come in the shell with all the components found in today's popular energy drinks. These ingredients include ginseng, taurine, lysine and caffeine. What makes them better, the company explains on their Web site, www.sumseeds.com, is that sunflower seeds are naturally healthy and contain protein, zinc, iron and Vitamin E in addition to the energy-boosting additives found in SumSeeds.
"Sumseeds is a true energy food," Dakota Valley Products President Tim Walter said. "We start with the nutritional power of a natural sunflower seed, then we add the energy. There is nothing like Sumseeds!"
The company hopes that their product will appeal to a variety of consumers, including those who participate in sports, hunting and activities that require long periods of concentration, such as gamers and truckers. Walter said that the company's basis in the rural community of Willow Lake, South Dakota - a state famous for its food production - will play a large role in their success. "Silicon Valley has its technology, New York City has its commerce, the Dakotas [have their] expertise in food production," Walter said.
Although Sumseeds cannot be found at most local retailers, they can be ordered in bulk from the company's Web site, or by calling (888) 858-2002. Each case contains 12 3.5 oz. bags and costs $30 per case including $5 for shipping and handling.
