Last week, the newly formed University of Michigan-Dearborn chapter of Change for Change held an emergency fundraiser for the earthquake victims in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. The earthquake took place on Oct. 8, 2005.
Currently the death count is over 79,000 and over three million people are homeless. Change for Change set up a table in the University Center where volunteers collected over $850 in charitable donations from UM-D students, staff and faculty.
Change for Change also decided to hold a club competition called the "Change for Change Charity Cha-Ching" to help raise even more money for the earthquake victims.
This is a competition between student organizations on campus to see who can raise the most money for the victims.
The organization that raises the most money will be awarded with a honorary plaque, pizza party and congratulations over the WUMD radio and The Michigan Journal.Â
Change for Change got several local businesses to set up jars in their stores to collect donations for the victims.
After all monetary donations have been collected, Change for Change will donate the money to a relief agency working in the region. Change for Change anticipates raising over $1500.
Nazneen Uddin, president of Change for Change, said, "The response of students and staff is overwhelming. One person pulled out a $100 bill and put it in the jar."
Change for Change is a national organization that encourages students to actively engage in philanthropic giving and empowers students to make a positive change in their community. The goal is not only to raise money to help those in need but also to encourage individuals to volunteer to help others in the community.
The UM-D chapter consists of Uddin, Treasurer Christina Smith, Charity Coordinator Zehra Imam, Public Relations Chair Ivan Co, On-Campus Coordinator Nida Syed and faculty adviser professor Gerald Moran.
Syed said, "We want to, not only raise money for the needy, but also show them that we care by volunteering at local groups like homeless shelters and soup kitchens. All our members are incredibly dedicated to the cause and consistently look to participate in opportunities to help others in the community."
Change for Change has already taken part in several volunteer events such as Habitat for Humanity home- building projects, packaging food boxes for Gleaner's food bank and volunteering to clean up Detroit for Make a Difference Day.
After the earthquake drive is over, Change for Change will continue their efforts to help other groups in need by volunteering in the community.
