Parents should be deciding what their children are being taught as far as sex education is concerned.

Sex education is hardly an exclusive occupation. Parents and schools are responsible for teaching children about sex. If they are both teaching children, they should be on the same page to provide consistent information to children.

The fact that parents are working with educators and others in the community helps ensure that the message children are getting about sex is not isolated. They will be exposed to not only what educators and health experts think children need to know, but also what parents want them to know.

No one knows the children better than their own parents. Parents and educators can provide a wide-spectrum of age-appropriate sex education and that is a step in the right direction.

Both sides, however, must realize the need to compromise and work together. The fact that parents are involved could result in the deletion of certain information that parents don't think their children are ready for or need to know.

But as long as both sides work together in the best interests of the children, then the children will be receiving educational and appropriate material.
