Despite getting extremely lost, driving a half-hour out of her way, and being forced to move her car several times, Heidi Schwartz kicked off the Sept. 23 SAB- sponsored Thursday special with style.
Schwartz, a singer-songwriter from Dayton, Ohio, has been making the rounds in the music industry despite, as she put it, "a lot of drama."
Getting started in the entertainment industry is always an uphill battle. There are few current entertainers who breezed to the top without some sort of story, and Heidi is no exception.
Heidi has been singing since she was a child, and in 2000 picked up a guitar for the first time. After deciding that a musician's life was the life she wanted to lead, Heidi left college and moved to Nashville, Tenn., home of the Grand Ol'Opry and the scene of much struggle for an aspiring grass-roots artist like Heidi.
While in Nashville, Heidi made the rounds to many different companies shopping around for songs that would suit her and would enable her to make a demo but found nothing. She contemplated giving up her dreams when a late night phone call awoke a new passion in her.
A friend mentioned that people who enter into our lives seem to travel in "Orbits" and a song was born. Heidi did not need anyone else's lyrics or music; at that moment she became a singer-songwriter.
Many of Heidi's songs have also been inspired by her paintings. Yes, the multi-talented musician also paints, and frequently finds inspiration from her other artistic expression.
Finally, after playing in coffee shops and even on street corners, Heidi found a booking agent and has been touring since the spring of 2004. Her ultimate goal is to cultivate a grassroots following and channel it into a major label.
But for now she is happy with the opportunities for playing her music wherever people will listen.
With a vocal mix of Michelle Branch and Jewel, Heidi stands out from many other singers of today. Her voice has a crystal clear tone, which never goes out of tune.
Each song is different from the next, and her range is incredible. All too often when singing live, even famous singers have a hard time sounding like themselves without a recording studio to back them, but Heidi's voice remains constant.
Senior psychology major Andrew Henrickson commented, "The mix of her voice with the acoustic guitar provides for a great listening experience."
Sophomore Mary Swatek agreed, adding, "I think she sounds a lot like Jewel, very laid-back."
The SAB chooses a wide range of performers year-round to appeal to large groups of the student body. Heidi Schwartz is the first of many talented performers to grace the UC stage this year.
Enjoy the opportunity to hear all the performers who will be appearing. You never know when you may be listening to the next Sheryl Crow or Elton John!
