It's been almost a year and a half since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the southeastern United States. Churning through Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama, cities like New Orleans and Biloxi were close to being decimated. Over 1,800 people lost their lives in the storms' paths.
A panel discussion on diversity in the workplace will take place on Feb. 21 on the campus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The discussion is part of the university's Difficult Dialogues Initiative, sponsored by the Ford Foundation and is free to the public.
Students Brian Berry and Abdullateef Muhiuddin (Muhi) have each announced their intention to run for Student Government's presidential position at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Elections are scheduled to take place March 27-29. Berry is the current SG vice president and Muhi has previously run for the vice presidential position.
In the January 23 issue, the editorial titled "MLK Essay Contest judged unfairly" incorrectly referenced a contest judged last year by Lyceum. The competition was not overseen by the organization. In the February 13 issue, the article titled "Court of Appeals denies same-sex health benefits" incorrectly stated that the ruling was released on February 3.
In an effort to minimize crime on campus, the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Campus Safety has set a goal to eventually convert all safety officers into police officers. "This has been a pretty good year with crime stats and we hope to see more of that," said Rick Gordon, director of Campus Safety.
The 27th annual Student Leadership Awards, sponsored by the Student Activities Office, has a new face this year. Nominations for awards are now being accepted online through the SAO Web site - sao.umd.umich.edu. The awards attempt to "recognize exceptional achievements by members of the UM-D community who demonstrate a commitment to student engagement through various forms," according to the site.
The Pre-Professional Health Society on campus and the Red Cross, encourage students to donate blood. The drive will run Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kochoff Hall. Joe Butkovich, right, a UM-D political science major, has donated blood more than a dozen times.
