Bush needs to take action in Israel

By M.J. Editorial Board

According to the USA PATRIOT Act, terrorism is defined as acts that "appear to be intended to influence the policy of government by intimidation or coercion." In an attempt to influence the Lebanese government, Israel has launched a campaign of terror against the citizens of Lebanon, decimating city and suburb, blocking every exit and slaughtering civilians.

Keeping the penny makes 'cents'

By M.J. Editorial Board

Thanks to regularly rising prices of zinc and copper, the cost of making a penny has finally surpassed its value of one cent. This reality has led to many Americans, including Congresspersons, to consider ending production of it altogether. We at the Michigan Journal concur with the majority of Americans that it is still a useful coin, and we should keep making it until a solid plan of dealing with odd change presents itself.

Returning students, don't be intimidated as you study this fall

By Sylvia McClain

In 49 days, the university will be bustling with students again, new and returning. I worry most about the older returning students. Did they have any bad experiences when they stepped back in time last semester? When the choice was made to try and recapture their dreams, did reality burst their bubble? I hope not.

Basic etiquette should be observed when at the movies

We should tack on, "only we don't plagiarize". Regardless that a recent article in the Michigan Journal states that 28 percent of our students actually do, campus policy is extremely clear on the subject.

Once again, Bill O'Reilly lies to save face for a lie

By Rob Switzer

Sweet Jesus, I hate Bill O'Reilly. I have a sign above my desk in the Michigan Journal office that reads just that, given to me as a joke by the Editor-in-Chief. It's actually a piece of promotional mail for the recent book by the same name, written by Joseph Minton Amann and Tom Breuer.

Being 24 is a strange mix of youth and maturity

By Julie Walker

Last week I turned 24 years old. I realize that two decades and some change is still laughable to the 40 and up crowd. But even they understand that 24 is not 12. These are some new truths I have accepted. Number one: at 24, you still screw up. Four days before my birthday, I carelessly snapped my glasses in half.

We failed the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster

By Abir Aldhalimi

The memory of Katrina is still mortifying a year later. August 29, 2005 turned parts of our country into unbelievable scenes of floods and fatalities. It was third-world conditions in the world's leading power. The hurricane was only the beginning. The tragedy lies in the severe conditions the survivors of the hurricanes endured after the hurricane.
